Answering a question of why always proves to be one of the toughest challenges for many. Why did you choose this college? Why did you choose your major? Why are you spending two years in your 20s to volunteer in a country completely across the world?
These questions create moments of regret, rage, happiness, and self-reflection. The Peace Corps has an obsession with bringing up these confusing emotions and an obsession with knowing your why.
Three months ago, my answer might have included my love for nature and how beautiful the Philippines is, or my passion for learning about other cultures and my desire to grow my technical skills in the environmental field. However, after a month of diarrhea from some amoeba and the emotional turmoil of leaving your best friends repeatedly, this is not like your site-seeing vacation to Italy.
While the initial motivations still remain valid, your why has got to keep you here. If you are feeling nosey, my why is mostly centered around challenging myself through very uncomfortable situations and relationships. For growth. Or whatever that is.
